Well, yeah, I find if you don't have a paid Livejournal account you can't post photos? Apparently so. Not something to learn late in the evening...

YOu can't? I have a free account, and I can post an image by giving LJ the url of where it is posted elsewhere, if that makes sense.

Hotlinking

Yep, that is certainly possible for unrestricted servers and used by many people to post images to free sites; however my main servers have hot-link blocking installed to prevent bandwidth problems. ...and frankly it was just as easy to bring up a page on another server as to upload and link and such.
